Invitation to an international workshop Understanding Public Space: Innovative Methods and Concepts for Interdisciplinary Research

From September 4 to 5, 2025, an international meeting of experts offering innovative approaches to explore public space and the topics and problems associated with it at the beginning of the new millennium will take place at the Display Gallery in Prague.

The two-day program maps research projects and methodological approaches across the entire spectrum of scientific disciplines. Short contributions accompanied by longer, open-to-the-audience debates will show how public space can be viewed from the perspectives of urban history, participatory anthropology, sociology, social and digital geography, or artistic research. Topics will include the neoliberal transformation of post-socialist cities, digital mapping of public space, acceleration of development projects, possibilities of working with vulnerable social groups, or urban gardening.

The lectures and debates will accompany an evening film screening, Embodied Spaces, Memories, and Power by Polish artist Joanna Rajkowska, presented at the Display Gallery on September 4. The author will personally introduce the genre of artistic performances in public space and discuss with the audience.

Admission to the program, which will be held in English, is free for the public. Reservations are recommended via email: velkova@usd.cas.cz.
